This 1988 Holden HSV VL SS Group A Walkinshaw is on the Collecting Cars online auction platform, giving collectors and enthusiasts an opportunity to own a rare piece of Australian motoring history.
The model was the first developed by Holden Special Vehicles, formed in collaboration between Tom Walkinshaw Racing and Holden, and was built in Melbourne to homologate the marque’s VL Commodore for Group A competition.
This car is #349 of 750 produced and is believed to be one of only 10 specified with a dealer-fitted Holden sunroof.
It is equipped with a slightly softened version of the 4987cc V8 developed for the race car, featuring electronic fuel injection, custom plenum and twin throttle-body intakes, and paired with a five-speed Borg-Warner gearbox.
This example is also fitted with a higher-lift camshaft, although it is unknown if this is one of the rare examples that was optioned as such from the factory.
All VL SS Group A Walkinshaw cars were finished in Panorama Silver paintwork, named after the Bathurst circuit and feature a distinctive, aerodynamically designed body kit with a front splitter, big front air intake and a rear riser and spoiler.
Riding on correct sixteen-inch five-spoke alloys, this car is said to be largely original and unmodified.
