Ferrari 250 GTO record auction price

RM Sotheby’s has sold a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 3765, for a whopping US$51.7 million.

This is a record price for a Ferrari sold at auction and the second-highest price paid for a car at auction. We reported on the sale of a super-rare Mercedes-Benz SLR that holds the wold price record.

The Ferrari GTO was sold as a part of Sotheby’s New York sales of Contemporary and Modern Art, reflecting its modern-art status.

The Ferrari 250 GTO was produced between 1962 and 1964 and there are believed to be only 36 currently surviving. Owners of this icon join an exclusive club that includes the fashion designer Ralph Lauren and Nick Mason, the drummer for Pink Floyd.

The car was raced by Ferrari’s racing division, Scuderia Ferrari. Its racing highlights include second place at the 1962 Nürburgring 1000km, piloted by Mike Parkes and Lorenzo Bandini.
